Peptide Storage Temperatures: The Quick Reference

Most peptide-stability questions reduce to one table. Here is that table, followed by the reasoning behind each row – because knowing why is what lets you handle the cases the table does not list.

Why the powder is so forgiving

Degradation chemistry – hydrolysis, deamidation, oxidation – overwhelmingly needs water. Lyophilization removes it, which is why a sealed freeze-dried vial survives shipping without ice packs and why the freeze-dried state is the storage default. The two things that undo this are moisture and repeated warming: keep the stopper sealed until use, and when taking a vial from the freezer, let it reach room temperature before opening so condensation does not land on the cake.

Why solutions are not

Once water is back, the clock runs. Refrigeration slows every degradation pathway; the choice of diluent decides how long the vial stays defensible to draw from repeatedly – the preservative question covered in bacteriostatic vs sterile water. If an experiment series will outlast those windows, divide the solution into single-use aliquots and freeze them once: repeated freeze-thaw cycling is a classic aggregation generator, and aliquoting is the standard defence.

Sequence-specific caveats

Methionine, cysteine, and tryptophan residues oxidise most readily – solutions of peptides containing them deserve the shortest windows and protection from light. Copper complexes such as GHK-Cu add pH sensitivity. When in doubt, the conservative row of the table wins, and every vial should carry its reconstitution date, concentration, and lot number so results stay traceable to the batch’s certificate of analysis. Concentration planning is the calculator’s job.
