Description
GDF-8, better known as myostatin, is the TGF-beta-family protein that acts as the body’s principal negative regulator of muscle mass — famously absent in double-muscled cattle breeds and rare hypermuscular animals.
In the laboratory it serves as the reference ligand for muscle-growth signalling research: receptor studies, antagonist screening and assay standardization all require the protein itself.
