BPC-157: What the Preclinical Literature Actually Shows
BPC-157 is among the most searched-for research peptides, and also among the most casually described. Much of what circulates online overstates the state of the science, so this article summarizes what the published literature actually contains — and, just as importantly, what it doesn’t.
What BPC-157 is
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide — a chain of fifteen amino acids — derived from a partial sequence of Body Protection Compound, a protein identified in human gastric juice. It is typically supplied for research as a lyophilized powder and has been studied since the early 1990s, primarily by a small number of research groups working with animal models.
What the preclinical research reports
The published body of work is almost entirely preclinical — that is, conducted in rodents and in cell culture, not in people. Within that literature, studies have reported observations across several model categories:
- Musculoskeletal injury models — studies in rats have reported effects on the healing of transected tendons, ligaments, and muscle, including a frequently cited Achilles tendon transection model.
- Gastrointestinal models — consistent with its gastric origin, BPC-157 has been studied in models of gastric ulceration, colitis, and intestinal anastomosis healing.
- Vascular and other models — reported findings include effects on angiogenesis and on various organ injury models.
Proposed mechanisms in this literature include modulation of growth factor expression and nitric-oxide pathways, though the mechanism has not been definitively established.
What the literature does not show
This is the part most online discussion omits. BPC-157 has no completed, published human clinical trials establishing safety or efficacy for any use. It is not approved by Health Canada, the FDA, or any other regulatory agency for any medical purpose, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has listed it as a prohibited substance for athletes. A further caveat: a large share of the preclinical literature originates from a small cluster of laboratories, and independent replication remains limited — a point that reviews of the compound have noted.
The bottom line for researchers
BPC-157 remains an interesting subject for laboratory investigation of tissue-repair pathways precisely because the preclinical signal is broad but the confirmatory science is thin. That gap is a research opportunity — it is not evidence of a safe or effective treatment for anything.
